Why do Private Assessments matter?

Autism and ADHD have increased in public awareness in recent years, which has prompted many people to come forwards for support. Likewise, demand for gender-affirming care to address gender dysphoria has outmet demand. A private assessment affords more time to do a thorough, personalised assessment than most services.

Our team of HCPC-registered clinical psychologists in Brighton are all expert in assessing and diagnosing both, having worked in the NHS for many years. Whether it is about self-understanding, accessing the right support or getting the right reasonable adjustments in place, we can help.

OVERVIEW

About this Assessment

Whether you are seeking to understanding whether you are neurodivergent or are seeking gender-affirming medical care, our compassionate, detailed assessments are designed to guide your self-understanding and accessing the right support. Our private ADHD, autism and gender dysphoria assessments in Brighton follow national clinical guidelines, including the NICE guidelines and NHS England's standards.

We work with numerous providers of medication for those seeking ADHD medication or gender-affirming care. Our reports have been accepted without issue by various NHS organisations, private prescribers, work places and government bodies. Each one aims to explore the evidence of the relevant diagnostic criteria being met, alongside identifying your needs.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What’s included in your assessment

Each assessment is a detailed, personalised conversation. You will meet with a clinician in-person in Brighton or online, typically over a number of sessions, to explore your life, the criteria, any areas of challenge or struggle, and your needs. Every assessment goes at your pace and works with your understanding of your needs.

After the assessment, you will receive a report summarising the shared understanding of your needs, what criteria have been met and what diagnoses you have, and various recommendations for managing ADHD, autism or for gender-affirming care.

Your assessment includes:

  • Psychometric questionnaires for you to complete before the assessment

  • Detailed interview across numerous sessions with an experienced, registered practitioner psychologist

  • Full exploration of your life history, difficulties and needs

  • Use of gold standard assessment tools and approaches, in line with national guidelines

  • A full, detailed report summarising the conclusions, evidence gathered and recommendations

  • Follow-up treatment options for medication with our partner providers, talking therapy or workplace reports

  • A feedback appointment to discuss the results, coping and next steps

Counselling Psychologist

DCounsPsy, HCPC Registered

Taking the step to seek psychological support can feel daunting, and finding the right person matters. I believe that meaningful support starts with genuinely understanding the person in front of you, not just the presenting problem. With over 15 years of experience across NHS and private settings, including acute inpatient hospital care, community mental health, and Children and Young People's services, I aim to offer a space that feels both clinically rigorous and genuinely welcoming. I offer psychological therapy drawing on a variety of evidenced based approaches, alongside neurodevelopmental assessments for adults, with a particular interest in ADHD and autism, delivered with a neuro-affirming approach. I hold a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, am a registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society.

Dr. Emma Macey

Dr. Emma Macey

Clinical Psychologist

DClinPsy, HCPC Registered

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 14 years of therapeutic experience working across NHS and private mental health services. I work with people aged 16 and over and have a particular interest in supporting individuals navigating identity, neurodiversity, trauma, and life transitions.

Throughout my career, I have worked with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, including those struggling with anxiety, low mood, self-esteem difficulties, trauma, shame, relationship difficulties, burnout, and questions around identity and belonging. I aim to create a therapeutic space that feels warm, collaborative, and genuinely accepting, where people feel able to explore difficulties without judgement.

Alongside therapy work, I offer gender assessments and have specialist experience working within a gender service, supporting transgender and gender diverse individuals exploring their identity and accessing gender-affirming care. I also completed specialist training through Pink Therapy and have many years of experience working affirmatively with LGBTQIA+ and Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diverse (GSRD) communities.

I have also completed specialist ADHD assessment training and will shortly be offering ADHD assessments alongside my wider clinical work. My interest in neurodiversity has developed through supporting many clients who have felt misunderstood, overwhelmed, or “different” for much of their lives, often without fully understanding why.

My therapeutic approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing from approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Systemic approaches, and EMDR-informed practice. I have recently completed EMDR Part 1 training and have a strong interest in trauma-informed approaches that help people process difficult experiences safely and compassionately.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our assessment services. Can't find your answer? Get in touch.

Where are the in-person private assessments in Brighton based?

We provide in-person private ADHD, autism and gender dysphoria diagnostic assessments from The Queer Therapy Hub, 3rd Floor, Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton, BN1 1YD. We also provide assessments online via Zoom if you would prefer.

After your private assessment, you will receive a full, detailed report with all of the evidence gathered, outcomes and recommendations. Your clinician will discuss the plan with you, which may include referral for medication with one of our partner clinics, or various coping strategies and reasonable adjustments. They are always personalised.

As our Brighton team are clinical psychologists, we cannot prescribe medicaiotn. However, we work with three medication providers who provide swift appointments for people who have completed our assessment pathway. We will refer you to them for ADHD medication if implicated.

As we are clinical psychologists, our Brighton team does not provide HRT. However, the process to starting HRT typically requires a diagnostic assessment undertaken by an independent practitioner psychologist, which includes a referral for HRT. We would refer you to one of our partner providers who would then look to prescribe you HRT.

There are few differences between in-person and online. We typically work with client preference, so it is up to you.
