OVERVIEW
What is Anxiety
While anxiety is a normal human emotion, at times in life we may feel it excessively or at times when there is no need to. This can make managing anxiety increasingly difficult and sometimes we may be inadvertently feeding it, such as through excessive worry, avoiding things or through checking.
Common symptoms of anxiety problems include persistent, overwhelming physical experiences of anxiety, scary or threatening thoughts, thinking the worst, finding it hard to stop thinking about negative or anxiety-provoking thoughts, and issues like perfectionism, low selfesteem and health anxiety.
There are various types of anxiety problems which we treat, including:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder - Persistent worry about everyday situations
Social Anxiety - Fear of social situations and being judged by others
Panic Disorder - Sudden, intense episodes of fear and physical symptoms
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder - Persistent intrusive thoughts that become obsessive, and repetitive patterns of behaviour
Health Anxiety - Excessive worry about illness or medical conditions
Work-Related Anxiety - Stress and anxiety affecting your professional life
Phobias - Intense fear of specific objects or situations

What Anxiety Therapy Involves
Anxiety therapy involves directly addressing how your anxiety might have spiralled. It uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for anxiety and related, evidence-based approaches. Working with your therapist, you will first develop an understanding together of why you have come to experience anxiety in the way that you have, what factors make it worse, and make a plan for moving forwards. This will be unique to the type of anxiety you are experiencing and to your personal circumstances.
Anxiety therapy then involves:
Learning practical techniques to manage the feeling of anxiety to stop it from escalating
Overcoming avoidance, so that anxiety no longer stops you from doing things
Exposure to what is causing anxiety, so that your body learns that it is safe rather than threatening
Addressing ‘safety behaviours’, which are behaviours that may be making your anxiety worse
Reworking what ‘rules’ you might have, such as excessively high standards in perfectionism, or that worrying might in some way help you
Practicing reducing worry, challenging catastrophic thinking and any anxiety ‘thinking traps’ you might have

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of anxiety can you treat?
Our clinical psychologists have expertise in treating all types of anxiety problems, including Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), social anxiety, panic disorder, health anxiety, work-related anxiety, phobias, OCD, and perfectionism. We work with both new and longstanding anxiety difficulties, at all levels of severity, for adults and young people.
How does anxiety therapy actually work — what will I have to do?
Anxiety therapy is active and collaborative. In early sessions, you and your therapist build a shared understanding of what drives your specific anxiety. You'll then work through techniques such as exposure to feared situations, tackling avoidance, addressing unhelpful rules and beliefs, reducing safety behaviours, and practising skills to manage physical anxiety responses. We work at your pace and never push you into anything before you're ready — though maintaining momentum is an important part of effective treatment.
Will anxiety therapy require me to face the things I'm scared of?
In most cases, yes — this is a key component of effective anxiety treatment. Avoidance is one of the main things that keeps anxiety going. Our therapists use carefully graded exposure, meaning you'll work your way up to more challenging situations in small, manageable steps, always with support. The process is tailored to your specific fears and circumstances, and you'll never be expected to take on more than you're ready for.
Can anxiety therapy help if I've had anxiety for many years?
Yes. Anxiety therapy can be effective for both recent and longstanding anxiety problems. Longer-standing anxiety may require more sessions, and we may also explore underlying beliefs and patterns that have built up over time. Our therapists are experienced in working with complex and chronic anxiety presentations and will adapt the approach to your specific history and needs.
Do I need a diagnosis to access anxiety therapy?
No diagnosis is required. Many people come to us with anxiety symptoms they recognise and want support with, without ever having received a formal label. Our therapists will assess your experiences fully in the early sessions and develop a clear formulation of what's happening for you — a diagnosis is not a prerequisite for effective treatment.
