OVERVIEW

What is ADHD Therapy and Coaching

ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental condition which involves difficulties sustaining attention, focusing, planning and organising, and hyperactivity, including excessive drive and energy and impulsivity. These traits can provide great strengths, such as hyper-focusing, creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, but they can also come with challenges that impact people’s ability to cope and function. ADHD therapists and coaching can help to address these challenges through expert support, practical strategies and managing emotions.

ADHD therapy and coaching helps with:

  • Understanding and addressing how ADHD impacts your life

  • Education on how ADHD works, why it causes problems and how to overcome them

  • Executive functioning coaching strategies, including planning, managing tasks and organisational strategies

  • Managing and overcoming burnout

  • Addressing rejection sensitive dysphoria

  • Managing emotions and self-criticism

How can an ADHD Therapist and coaching help

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for ADHD is an evidence-based, practical therapy that helps reduce the impact ADHD traits have on people. Our ADHD Therapists use CBT for ADHD and ADHD coaching strategies to help improve lives. You will first work with your therapist to understand your ADHD traits and where you have difficulties. You will work together to map out how this works and what contributes to the problems.

From there, you will work on practical strategies, including:

  • How to build habits with ADHD

  • Executive functioning strategies and techniques

  • Emotion regulation skills

  • Addressing self-criticism

  • Reasonable adjustments in your environment

  • Body doubling and accountability coaching

  • Troubleshooting CBT for ADHD is practical, goal-orientated and flexible to meet individual needs.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ADHD therapy and coaching, and how does it differ from medication?

ADHD therapy and coaching provides practical, psychological strategies to address the day-to-day challenges of ADHD — such as executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitive dysphoria, and self-criticism — using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) adapted for ADHD. Unlike medication, which addresses the neurobiological symptoms directly, therapy focuses on building skills, habits, and coping strategies that work with your ADHD brain. The two approaches complement each other well and can be used together.

Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to access ADHD therapy?

No. We provide ADHD therapy and coaching for both diagnosed and suspected ADHD. If you recognise ADHD traits in yourself and want practical support, you don't need to wait for a formal assessment. Of course, if you would also like a diagnosis, we offer private ADHD assessments — and some clients choose to pursue both simultaneously.

What does ADHD coaching involve in practice?

ADHD coaching at Unlock Psychology is delivered by clinical psychologists rather than unregulated coaches, meaning it combines the practical, goal-focused elements of coaching with clinical expertise. Sessions cover executive functioning strategies (planning, task management, organisation), building sustainable habits with ADHD, addressing emotional regulation and rejection sensitivity, body doubling and accountability techniques, managing burnout, and troubleshooting when strategies aren't working. Every plan is personalised to your specific ADHD profile and life circumstances.

Can ADHD therapy help with rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD)?

Yes. Rejection sensitive dysphoria — intense emotional pain triggered by perceived criticism, failure, or rejection — is one of the most disruptive and under-recognised aspects of ADHD, and it's something our therapists are specifically trained to address. CBT techniques for RSD include understanding the emotional patterns involved, developing grounded self-appraisal, reducing avoidance of situations that trigger RSD, and building emotional regulation skills.

Can ADHD therapy help with burnout?

Yes. ADHD burnout — a state of profound exhaustion caused by years of overcompensating, masking, and pushing through ADHD challenges without adequate support — is something our therapists understand well. Therapy can help you identify the patterns that lead to burnout, pace yourself more sustainably, set up better systems and boundaries, and rebuild from a burnout state at a manageable pace.
