OVERVIEW

What is CBT Therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the front-line recommended type of therapy for most types of mental health problems, including:

  • Depression and low mood.

  • All types of anxiety including panic attacks, worry, perfectionism.

  • Low self-esteem and low confidence.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder.

  • ADHD.

  • Severe mental health difficulties including self-harm, psychosis and substance misuse

It is an action-focused, goal-focused therapy that focuses on change. CBT Therapy looks at addressing patterns of thoughts, processing and managing difficult emotions, and ultimately changing behaviour. You will work with a fully qualified CBT therapist to move towards your goals and improve your mental health.

What CBT Therapy Involves

CBT sessions last 50 minutes. They can be online or in-person – research shows there is no real difference in its effectiveness so your preference of either is fine. Your CBT therapist will work with you initially to understand what has led to your difficulties occurring, what keeps them going and what you would ultimately like things to be like. This normally takes a few sessions and it is essential to have a shared understanding of the problem.

From there, CBT therapy involves:

  • A structured agenda for each session, where you will focus on learning, experimenting and moving towards your goals

  • Psychoeducation about how mental health works and what likely contributes to your difficulties

  • Processing and managing emotions

  • Learning and practicing strategies to improve the problems you are facing

  • Reviewing and monitoring change over time

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions can CBT therapy treat?Answer

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is the NICE-recommended frontline treatment for a wide range of mental health difficulties, including depression, all types of anxiety (including panic disorder, health anxiety, social anxiety, and generalised anxiety), OCD, PTSD, low self-esteem, and ADHD. Our doctorate-trained CBT therapists are experienced with both common and more complex presentations, including those with a neurodivergent profile.

Is online CBT therapy as effective as in-person sessions?

Yes — research consistently shows that online CBT is as effective as in-person therapy for the vast majority of conditions. We offer both formats and let you choose based on your preference and circumstances. Our secure video platform makes online sessions straightforward and confidential, whether you're in Warwickshire, Birmingham, or anywhere else in the UK.

What qualifications do your CBT therapists have?

All of our CBT therapists are doctorate-trained clinical psychologists (DClinPsy) who are HCPC-registered and BABCP-accredited. They each have a minimum of 10 years' clinical experience and have all previously worked in NHS settings. This means the standard of care you receive is equivalent to what you'd expect from NHS psychological therapy, but with significantly shorter waiting times.

How does a typical CBT session work?

Each 50-minute CBT session follows a structured agenda agreed at the start with your therapist. Initially, sessions focus on building a shared understanding of your difficulties — what causes them, what maintains them, and what you want to change. From there, sessions involve learning and practising specific techniques, reviewing homework tasks, monitoring progress, and refining your strategies as you move toward your goals.

How quickly can I be seen for CBT therapy in Warwickshire or Birmingham?

We typically offer initial consultations within a few days of enquiry and can usually begin regular therapy sessions within 1–2 weeks. This contrasts sharply with NHS Talking Therapies (IAPT) waiting lists, which can be several months long. Contact us via the enquiry form and we'll respond within 24 hours to discuss availability.
