OVERVIEW
What is Post-traumatic Stress
When we experience a traumatic incident, sometimes our brains are in such a severe state of threat that the event is not properly processed. This means that we can essentially relive the event ‘as if’ it is happening now, because the unprocessed memory is intruding into our awareness. This can happen months and years after the event and be incredibly challenging, leading to strong, difficult emotions, avoiding certain reminders or triggers, and impacting your sense of self and relationships. The trauma memory needs to be safely processed in order to address these symptoms, as well as compassionate support to address the impact of the symptoms, which is where trauma therapy can help.
Types of traumatic incidences we can help to process include:
Life threatening accidents and emergencies, such as car accidents
Assaults
Witnessing a loss of life or near miss
Childhood traumas, such as abuse and neglect
Impact of war
Emergency situations, such as fires or police incidents
Bullying and aggression
Traumatic losses and grief

What Trauma Therapy Involves
rauma therapy using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach to address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). You will work with a therapist to establish how the trauma has impacted you, identify the symptoms you experience and understand what keeps them going. The first stages often involve building a sense of safety (called stabilisation) to help to ground and settle difficult emotions using specific coping strategies. Then, you will begin to identify any beliefs and emotions associated with the traumatic memory so that these can be addressed. Through re-processing the trauma, the memory becomes more integrated, which can reduce its impact on your brain and body.
Strategies and techniques involved in trauma therapy are:
Identifying ‘hot spots’ in the memory and what this means to you (such as a sense of responsibility, danger, guilt or other meanings)
Processing traumatic memories to alter the beliefs, memory and emotions associated with it in session
Rescripting the memory to change its impact
Addressing difficult emotions with coping strategies
Reducing avoidance
Rebuilding your life including establishing new meanings, positive activities and relationships

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of trauma can your therapists help with?
Our clinical psychologists provide trauma therapy for a wide range of traumatic experiences, including road traffic accidents and medical emergencies, physical or sexual assault, childhood abuse or neglect, loss and traumatic bereavement, workplace incidents, bullying and aggression, and complex or cumulative trauma. We work with adults and young people experiencing PTSD and related post-traumatic difficulties, whatever their severity or how long ago the trauma occurred.
What therapy approaches do you use for trauma and PTSD?
We use Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) — both NICE-recommended, gold standard treatments for PTSD. The approach used will depend on the nature of your trauma and your preferences. Both involve processing the traumatic memory in a safe and structured way to reduce its ongoing impact, rather than simply teaching you to manage the symptoms.
I'm worried that talking about my trauma will make things worse — is this safe?
This is a very understandable concern. The early stages of trauma therapy always focus on building stability and safety first, through grounding techniques and coping strategies, before any direct processing of traumatic memories begins. This phase — called stabilisation — ensures you are resourced and prepared before moving into deeper work. We go entirely at your pace and nothing happens without your consent and readiness.
Can trauma therapy help with childhood trauma that happened many years ago?
Yes. Trauma therapy can be highly effective for childhood trauma regardless of how long ago it occurred. Unprocessed traumatic memories can continue to affect emotional regulation, relationships, and sense of self for decades. Our therapists are experienced in working with complex developmental trauma and are trained in approaches such as schema-informed CBT alongside standard trauma-focused methods for more layered presentations.
How many sessions of trauma therapy will I need?
This depends on the nature and complexity of your trauma. Single-incident PTSD (such as a road accident) often responds well within 8–16 sessions of Trauma-Focused CBT or EMDR. Complex or childhood trauma typically requires more extended work. We assess this collaboratively with you and review progress regularly so you always have a clear sense of where you are in the process.
