About The Level 2 Award in Effective Listening Skills


Comprehensive Listening Skills Training to Further Your Career


This practical Level 2 Award offers the theory and skills required to have effective listening skills in your daily life. It is specifically designed for people with an interest in the practice of counselling, either as a first-step towards future qualifications, or as a way of building their skillet.


You will have a mixture of didactic, experiential and interactive teaching workshops, alongside completing independent study. You will practice listening skills which will be assessed by your peers and tutor, leading to the submission of a portfolio of evidence for the final assessment.

Meet The Course Director, Dr Alastair Pipkin

HCPC-Registered Clinical Psychologist, BABCP Fully Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

Dr. Alastair Pipkin is a HCPC-registered clinical psychologist, fully accredited cognitive behavioural therapist with the BABCP, and an associate fellow of the higher education academy. He has setup, designed and delivered training for front-line psychological practitioners using CBT, written university-level courses in counselling and mental health, and trained hundreds of mental health professionals in CBT.

What you'll learn

The CPCAB Level 2 Award in Effective Listening Skills is an Ofqual-regulated qualification. By the end of the programme, you will be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Create a safe space for an individual to talk

  • Help an individual to talk about their concerns

  • Understand the importance of being non-judgemental

  • Listen attentively

  • Understand the importance of self-awareness

  • Manage the listening activity sensitively

  • Use reflection to develop effective listening skills

Therapy Session Discussion

The program is delivered over 5x 3 hour live, online sessions. The cohort contains no more than 24 people to enable a mixture of live skills demonstrations, practice, group discussions, reflective activities and didactic and interactive lectures. There are additional reading lists, resources and reflective activities to enhance your learning.


Format: The course is delivered via live, online lectures, totalling 15 hours. The course totals 30 guided learning hours.


Duration: The course lasts 5 weeks, spanning three live, online, interactive lectures. You will complete additional learning outside of the taught sessions and submit your portfolio in the final week.


Support: You will have regular tutorials with your tutor, peer learning and complete regular learning reviews.


Assessment: There is one assessment which is a portfolio, which is completed and developed each week in the teaching sessions.


Award: You will be awarded a recognised Level 2 Award in Effective Listening Skills, awarded by the CPCAB.

The CPCAB Level 2 Award in Effective Listening Skills (ELSK-L2) costs £350 plus £61 CPCAB registration fee. There are no extra or hidden costs.
