What is CBT Therapy?

CBT therapy is a structured, goal-oriented treatment that focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. CBT therapy concentrates on current problems and teaches practical skills you can use immediately and for life, though we will also look at how your problems might have developed from past experiences where helpful as well.

Conditions CBT Therapy Treats:

  • Anxiety Disorders - Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder

  • Depression - Major depression, persistent low mood, seasonal depression, bipolar disorder

  • Phobias - Specific fears and avoidance behaviors

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder - Intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - Processing traumatic experiences

  • Eating Disorders - Unhealthy relationships with food and body image

  • Substance Misuse Disorder - Over-use and/or dependence on substances including alcohol and drugs

Why CBT Therapy is so Effective

Evidence-Based Results

CBT therapy has more research supporting its effectiveness than any other psychological treatment:

  • 60-80% improvement rates for anxiety and depression

  • Lasting results - benefits continue after therapy ends

  • Recommended by NICE - UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

  • International recognition - Used worldwide in healthcare systems

Practical Skills for Life

Unlike some therapies, CBT gives you concrete tools:

  • Detailed, personalised self-awareness

  • Self-help strategies you can use independently

  • Problem-solving skills for future challenges

  • Early warning systems to prevent relapse

  • Confidence in your ability to manage difficulties

How CBT Therapy Works

The CBT Model

CBT therapy is based on understanding how three elements interact:

  • Thoughts - What goes through your mind and the way that you think

  • Feelings - Your emotional responses

  • Behaviors - What you do or avoid doing

By changing one element, you can positively influence the others, creating a cycle of improvement.

CBT Techniques You Will Learn

  • Thought challenging - Identifying and questioning unhelpful thinking patterns

  • Behavioral experiments - Testing fears and assumptions in real-life situations

  • Activity scheduling - Planning activities that improve mood and achievement

  • Exposure therapy - Gradually facing avoided situations safely

  • Problem-solving skills - Breaking down overwhelming problems into manageable steps
