What is autism?
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person experiences the world and interacts with others. Many autistic adults report long-term challenges that may go unrecognised or misunderstood — especially if they’ve developed coping strategies or masked their traits over time.
Some common autistic experiences in adulthood include:
-
Difficulty understanding or navigating social rules and communication
-
Struggling to interpret others’ intentions or perspectives
-
Challenges with eye contact or facial expressions
-
Sensory sensitivities (e.g. to noise, light, touch, or certain smells)
-
Deep focus on specific interests or routines
-
Distress when routines are disrupted or unexpected change occurs
-
A strong need for sameness, order, and predictability
Our autism assessments for adults are designed to identify whether your experiences are consistent with autism and how they’ve shaped your life over time. We’ll also explore masking, which is when people suppress or camouflage their traits to fit into a neurotypical world — something commonly reported by autistic women and LGBTQ+ adults.
We also specialise in gender-informed assessments. That means recognising how autism may present differently in men, women, and non-binary people, and ensuring that our process is affirming for trans and gender-diverse clients. Understanding how gender and neurodivergence intersect is a key part of our assessment approach.

Will My Private Autism Assessment Be Accepted by My GP or the NHS?
Many people understandably worry whether a private autism diagnosis will be recognised by their GP, NHS service, university, or employer. It’s a common concern, but the reality is that when done to the right standard, private reports are widely accepted.
Our assessments follow the same gold-standard clinical guidelines recommended by NICE, and are delivered by HCPC-registered clinical psychologists — the same qualifications used within NHS services. Most GPs, education providers, and workplaces accept our reports without issue.
If needed, we’re happy to liaise directly with your GP or care provider to explain our process, methods, and conclusions. In practice, we’ve seen our diagnostic reports support:
-
NHS mental health referrals
-
Workplace adjustments under Equality Act guidelines
-
University and college disability accommodations
To date, we’ve had no rejections of our reports by GPs or other services.
We recommend speaking with your GP before your assessment if you plan to use the diagnosis for medical or treatment pathways. This gives you a chance to confirm they will accept a private report from a qualified psychologist and ensures smooth coordination with ongoing care.
You can also review guidance from the National Autistic Society on how private autism assessments fit within NHS frameworks.
